What does being a ninja have to do with improv? The Ninja, Pirate, Robot theory was created by UCB performer Billy Merritt. This theory proposes that improvisers can be categorized into 3 groups and describes the behaviors and tendencies of those 3 types of improvisers: creative initiators, grounded reactors, and people who do both, aka "ninjas". In this workshop for advanced improvisers, we'll gain understanding around the value of being an improv "ninja", and workshop skills to help you become that well-rounded utility player.

Improv without object work is like a toilet without a seat. It's still a toilet technically, but not one that most people are necessarily happy to encounter. Object work should be considered essential, and yet for many improvisers, the default is "talking heads." In this workshop for intermediate to advanced improvisers, we'll gain an understanding of the value and importance of object work and scene painting. We'll also workshop best practices through drilling and coaching.

This is a class for anyone interested in writing jokes like a professional. The class consists of four, three-hour classes (9/14, 9/21, 10/5, 10/12). After the completion of class, students will perform a stand up set in a showcase on October 13th.

The remaining time will focus on students’ individual comedy projects and questions. Topics will include joke structure, writing exercises, strategic wordplay, joke subtext and much much more.
As with all Mike’s workshops, students are guaranteed to write their own, original joke in the first ten minutes.
